FALL INTO FOCUS: PRODUCTIVITY TIPS FOR THE SEM

BY: LEKHYA KANTHETI

As the weather gets colder and midterm season approaches, it is essential to have a routine set for the semester while the sun is out and all is right with the world.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed as assignments, extracurriculars, and social events pile up. The hard truth: it’s about to get worse. But don’t worry! This fall productivity list is here to help you stay on top of the game. So, let’s dive into some easy and effective ways to keep your productivity on track and make the most of this semester.

  1. Revamp your study space

Before you begin your work, make sure your environment is motivating you to focus. Refreshing your study space to romanticize your statistics assignment. You can decorate with string lights, have a whiteboard, magnets, and a small plant if it helps. Minimize clutter and distractions on your desk to maximize productivity.

Pro tip: Keep all your essentials - pens, notebooks, chargers - within arm’s reach so that you don’t have to keep resetting your concentration!

  2. The 5-minute rule

The hardest part of any task is STARTING. By telling yourself you need to do it for just 5 minutes, the huge, daunting task in front of you turns into a simple activity, making it easier to begin. Once those 5 minutes are up, you’ll often find that momentum has kicked in, and you’re more likely to keep going. Even if you stop, it will still be less overwhelming the next time you pick it up, and you’ve made progress :)

  3. Today’s to-dods

Feeling stressed? Start your week and your day by writing down everything you need to get done - from your assignments and meetings to buying your friend’s birthday gift. Apps like Todoist and Notion (which I cannot recommend enough) work great for planning and dividing all your tasks. It is true that things seem less daunting when you know exactly what you’re dealing with, reducing most of your stress and anxiety.

  4. Study-Buddy

Accountability and support is key. I would be less likely to procrastinate if my roommate is constantly calling me out and counting on me, so I can assure you this works! Plus, you can also discuss topics with your friends which will help you understand material better and clarify any confusion. It also makes studying much less stressful and isolating while turning it into something to look forward to.

  5. google calendar = your best friend

You must have heard this already but we all know how effective this is. Google Calendar eliminates chaos from my life. By mapping out all your classes, meetings (like USWIB general meetings), and deadlines, you transform your busy schedule into something manageable. You can visualize your day and stay on top of things to avoid missing anything important. The more you rely on it, the less you have to worry about!

  6. keep it moving

Keep moving!! Change your study space and environment. It really helps rewire your brain and inspires creativity and different perspectives. From afternoons studying at the park to late nights at Bobst, adapt to your mood and the work you have to get done. Staying in the same space for too long can also make you feel unmotivated or make your tasks repetitive, so this makes studying exciting as well!

  7. Burning out means losing your fire

Burning out means losing your fire, and once that spark is gone, it’s hard to get it back. To keep your energy and passion alive, it is SO important to take breaks when you need them and recharge. Take a walk, watch 2 episodes, cook yourself a meal, and hang out with friends. This will make your day feel more balanced and you will be able to continue working more effectively. Although some late nights are inevitable, planning and recharging will reduce the need for more. So, protect your fire - balance your hard work with rest and stay fueled for the rest of the semester!

And you can always reach out to your friends or seniors for help. All in all, plan well, work smart, and ask for help when you need it - that is all it takes for you to succeed. Good luck!
