Fashion Tips for Interviews and Professional Events

By: Julia Jacobsen

Dressing well for interviews and professional events is key to making a strong first impression. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when dressing for these events:

1. Research the Dress Code Based on Event or Industry

Dressing appropriately for your industry signals that you understand its expectations and norms. In fields like law and finance, where roles are often client-facing and trust is crucial, formal attire helps enhance credibility. For example, in an investment banking role, typical attire includes a tailored pantsuit in black or navy, a modest blouse, and pointed-toe heels.

2. Invest in Versatile Pieces

It’s extremely helpful to invest in high-quality pieces that can be mixed and matched, while still maintaining the expected level of professionalism. Recommended staples include one pantsuit, one white blouse, one pastel-colored button-down, and a good-quality pair of loafers or heels. Stores like Aritzia, Theory, and Abercrombie offer reliable, well-made options.

3. Simplicity is Key

Simple pieces are a smart investment because they don’t go out of style quickly, making them more sustainable and cost-effective. You’ll get more wear out of timeless styles than trend-driven items. Additionally, simplicity in workwear conveys a sharp, put-together appearance that aligns with professional standards, which minimizes any possible distractions.

4. Accessorize!

Accessories such as necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, can be worn to enhance your look regardless of industry. Accessories can elevate any professional look, giving you a subtle way to express your individual style within dress code boundaries.

All of the tips I listed are important to keep in mind, but the most important tip I can give is to feel comfortable and be yourself! A professional outfit is a great start to acing an interview, but having confidence in who you are and your abilities is something you can’t purchase to enhance your looks. Remember, you can do incredible things!
