Entertainment business spotlight

BY ELYSE LADIA

Hi USWIB!

As we know, there are a wide range of industries and applications to which degrees in business-related fields can lead. It can be daunting to think about all the different possibilities of pathways to careers in business, both traditional and non-traditional. Today, I’ll be highlighting an industry I’m personally very interested in—the entertainment industry—and providing some basic information and resources for others who may be interested in pursuing a career in this industry as well.

‘Entertainment business’ encapsulates various sectors of the entertainment industry, including film, television, gaming, music, live events, and telecommunication services. Some of the largest companies you are likely familiar with in the industry include Comcast Corporation, The Walt Disney Company, Netflix, Paramount, Spotify, Live Nation Entertainment, Nintendo, Universal Music Group, and more. Those on the business side of entertainment can focus on anything from handling marketing strategies and campaigns to reviewing and dealing with entertainment and corporate contracts to ensuring compliance and performing accounting and tax duties.

Interested in learning more about the business of entertainment and media but not sure how? Start by researching and keeping up with sectors of the industry that interest you to grow your knowledge! For example, if you are interested in film and television, read publications such as Variety and Deadline and research various companies and what types of jobs you might be interested in pursuing. In addition, NYU and Stern offer many resources to learn more about the business of entertainment and get hands-on experience.

Looking for courses to take related to the business of entertainment? NYU offers a unique cross-school minor for undergraduates called Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology (BEMT)—one of the most popular minors at NYU. Through this minor, students can try courses in Stern, Tisch, and Steinhardt in order to learn about all sides of the entertainment and media industries. Some classes are just 2 credits, allowing students to try out more BEMT classes and find which sides and aspects of the industry interest them more. Take a look at this document which details the wide range of course offerings within the BEMT minor!

Looking for clubs to join related to entertainment business? The Stern Tisch Entertainment Business Association (STEBA) is a cross-school student organization that provides industry panels, career and social events, and workshops for students to learn about the entertainment industries, workshop skills, and connect with industry professionals and other students pursuing careers in film, television, music, sports, games, publishing, talent, and more. USWIB also offers events throughout the semester which focus on highlighting various industries, including non-traditional industries like entertainment, media, and fashion! These events feature speakers and provide breakdowns of the industry which can help students better understand what they are interested in pursuing!
