Elective Reccomendations

With course selection season rapidly approaching, everyone is left scrambling to decide what course requirements they need, what electives to take, or what exactly they are signing up for. I have gone around and asked several Stern students for their favorite Stern and non-Stern electives to give you all ideas on what to add to your cart. The results are as follows: 

 

Stern Electives

Stern Electives 〰️

  • Learn the best practices in digital marketing, and to give students the opportunity to apply this knowledge to building or improving the marketer’s use of digital media.

    Upon completion you will be:

    • Proficient in Google Analytics

    • Able to integrate statistical models

    • Familiar with current regulation around e-mail marketing and data privacy

    Class information:

    • Lecture based class with periodic exams

    • Material is very applicable and useful for future employment opportunities

  • Covers the economic development and current structure of Asian economies, as well as the rise of regional economic interaction and institutions.

    Upon completion you will be:

    • Able to challenge assumptions about how economies and corporations should be organized and governed in order to be successful

    Class information:

    • Good way to put into context skills learned in previous classes like EGB

    • Class grade is almost evenly divided between projects, participation, midterm, and a final paper

    • More of a lecture-based course with assigned readings used to explore concepts learned in class.

  • Explores how strategic frameworks are applied to high level business problems.

    Upon completion you will be:

    • More comfortable with the principles behind creating and delivering effective visual slide-based presentations via mock deliveries.

    Class information:

    • Case interviews and case competitions are used as models in class.

    • Highly recommended for students who wish to participate in case competitions.

  • About how information technology is used to support business processes and enterprise-wide initiatives to fulfill the strategic, tactical and operational requirements of business organizations.

    Upon completion you will:

    • Have basic skills in SQL, Tableau and other relevant skill sets when working with data.

    Class information:

    • Class uses many case studies and business scenarios/problems are presented to teach students how to use IT to enhance their analytical skills.

 

Non-Stern Electives

Non-Stern Electives 〰️

    • One of the most popular NYU electives

    • Allows for students to better understand their own definition of happiness

    • Bridges the gap between science and the feeling of happiness

    • Low stress, lecture based course with interesting material

    • Class visits different museums across NYC!

    • Lecture content informs students of the history and culture behind different exhibits

    • Free access to special events/ exhibits!

    • Very good reviews from previous students and low stress environment

    • Helps students learn how to trace historical context of events in the news

    • Stays up to date and informed concurrent events

    • Discussion of politics in different political climates

    • Reading and lecture based course

    • Students rate it as fairly simple with interesting content!

    • Great for students with interests in psychology/ scientific fields

    • Examines the influence of social factors, including discrimination, media, poverty, education, trauma, etc.

    • Discusses the current care system for mental health and potential ways to work on improving it

    • Lecture based course with minimal assignments in a low stress environment

    • Most CAMS classes are pretty well-liked amongst students

    • One credit course

    • Private one on one coaching in guitar (or any other instrument available in the course selection catalog)

    • Meets once a week

    • Good opportunity to explore and develop new skills in a private setting
